The Philadelphia Inquirer on March 9, 2009, reported on a pilot program in Camden employing a nurse practitioner, a social worker, and a community health worker began closely following these top users – even tracking them down in homeless shelters to help find them places to live. The team made sure patients checked their blood sugar, if necessary, and took their medications. Early data show promising results: a significant reduction in ER visits, and huge savings. New Jersey non-profits are feeling the effects of the economic downturn, rising demand for services and drastically shrinking pools of funding, according to a survey conducted by the Center for Non-Profits. New Jersey Non-Profits 2009: Trends and Outlook is the latest in a series of annual surveys by the Center to gauge trends, experiences and projections of New Jersey non-profit organizations. On April 1, 2009, the New York Times published Downturn Puts New Stresses on Libraries. Urban ills like homelessness have affected libraries in many cities for years, but librarians here and elsewhere say they are seeing new challenges. They find people asleep more often at cubicles. Patrons who cannot read or write ask for help filling out job applications. Some people sit at computers trying to use the Internet, even though they have no idea what the Internet is. On March 31, 2009, NPR broadcasted For Homeless, A Home May Be The Best Rehab by Joseph Shapiro. Now a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association offers new support to the Housing First approach. Mary Larimer, a clinical psychologist at the University of Washington, chose to study a 75-unit apartment building for homeless people in Seattle because it used a Housing First approach – and because it had created controversy.
