On Thursday, June 25, the Section 8 Voucher Reform Act (SEVRA) was introduced in the House. The legislation, H. R. 3045, was introduced by Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA), along with Representatives Barney Frank (D-MA), Joe Baca (D-CA), Steve Cohen (D-TN), and Judy Biggert (R-IL). There are currently no co-sponsors from New Jersey.
H. R. 3045 would streamline and make improvements to the Housing Choice Voucher program and authorize 150,000 new vouchers in fiscal year (FY) 2010. It has been referred to the Financial Services Committee.
This is a priority issue for the New Jersey Advocacy Network to End Homelessness. It was one of the issues in last year’s Congressional Report Card.
On Friday June 5, 2009, between 9:30 and noon, the New Jersey Advocacy Network to End Homelessness and the Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey will be holding a public forum to discuss the Section Eight Voucher Reform Act (SEVRA). The Center for Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) will be presenting on the current status of SEVRA as well as the benefits to the community.
