More than three hundred and fifty (350) formerly homeless people, passionate advocates and housing providers from across the state attended the July 28, 2009 Congressional Reception. One of the most impressive parts of the event were the speeches by the formerly homeless that preceded the speeches by the members of Congress. Starting today we will publish links to the video and a summary of the speeches.

On Tuesday at the Congressional Reception, Rina spoke about how she had always been “strong like a tiger” until she became a victim of domestic violence. This led to her becoming homeless. Rina spoke about the support and encouragement that she received from the YWCA of Eastern Union County. Today she is moving into her own house, working part-time and going to school full-time.

Congressman Leonard Lance (R-7) listened intently as she spoke. In his remarks he noted that as a member of the New Jersey Legislature he had sponsored legislation that provided a dedicated funding stream for domestic violence programs.

He then stated empathically that “no one should be without a residence anywhere in the United States and especially in the Great State of New Jersey.”

He then listed every county in alphabetical order and indicated that no one should be homeless in any of these counties.

On behalf of the New Jersey Advocacy Network to End Homelessness, Rina presented Congressman Leonard Lance with a plaque thanking him for his support for supporting the McKinney-Vento reauthorization.
