More than three hundred and fifty (350) formerly homeless people, passionate advocates and housing providers from across the state attended the July 28, 2009 Congressional Reception. As we stated last Monday, one of the most impressive parts of the event were the speeches by the formerly homeless that preceded the speeches by the members of Congress. This is the eighth in our series of publishing links to the video and a summary of the speeches.
Yvette Colon explained the difficulties that have befallen her over the last fifteen years since being diagnosed with the HIV virus. She became depressed and hospitalized for mental illness. She became involved with the Jersey City Episcopal Community Development Corporation where she was able to secure a Shelter plus Care voucher. She now lives in her own apartment and is drug free. She spoke about how important having housing means to her. She is now able to have her medication and meals on time everyday. She encouraged Congress “to continue to fund these programs because to stop being homeless you need housing.”
Kate Fink represented Congressman Albio Sires (D-13) but did not speak.
