More than three hundred and fifty (350) formerly homeless people, passionate advocates and housing providers from across the state attended the July 28, 2009 Congressional Reception. As we stated last Monday, one of the most impressive parts of the event were the speeches by the formerly homeless that preceded the speeches by the members of Congress. This is the tenth in our series of publishing links to the video and a summary of the speeches.

Sally Vernon reminded us not to jump to conclusions about the homeless. “In the current economy homelessness could happen to anyone,” she said. She spoke of the degradation and how she felt like a second class citizen when she was homeless. She stressed that we are all equal. She now lives in a one bedroom apartment, does volunteer work and hopes to begin college in the fall. She thanked those at Jewish Family Service of Atlantic and Cape May Counties for helping her overcome her homelessness. “Without their help I would not be here today.”
