Daily Record Letter to the Editors
Frelinghuysen skipped homelessness reception

One of the follow-up action steps we requested of those who attended the 3rd Annual Congressional Reception was to have the participants send letters to their members of congress as well as to their local newspapers.

Arthur E. Perkins of Morristown is the first to notify us that his letter has been published. His letter about Congressman Rodney P. Freylinghuysen not attending was published in the August 18, 2009, edition of the Daily Record.

The following is the text of his letter to the editor.

“Frelinghuysen skipped homelessness reception”

I want to express my disappointment with Rep. Rodney P. Freylinghuysen, R-Harding, for his failure to attend the Third Annual Congressional Reception on Homelessness in New Jersey sponsored by the New Jersey Advocacy Network to End Homelessness.

More than 300 New Jersey residents traveled to Washington D.C. to participate in this event, held at the Russell Senate Office Building on July 28. I and they heard three House members from New Jersey, the aides of an additional five from the state and an aide to U.S. Senator Robert Menendez, D-N.J., attend long enough to address this homelessness delegation, all of whom spent six to 10 hours on buses from and back to New Jersey to be a part of this meeting.

It was an impressive gathering. Rep. Freylinghuysen’s website lists the 11 issues he is most concerned about. Healthcare is on that list, but none of them addresses human rights such as support to avoid homelessness. The congressman should be concerned about such things as tenant-based vouchers, money for public housing and homeless assistance grants.

Arthur E. Perkins Jr.
Morristown
