Bob Braun notes that: “People with causes often chase Smith, the veteran Republican lawmaker who has spent 28 years in Congress and is dean of the New Jersey delegation. They often catch him, enlisting his help in some of the most emotionally charged causes any House member faces: religious persecution, child abduction, human trafficking, torture victims, seriously injured veterans, refugees, afflictions like autism and chronic Lyme disease.”They come to me because they know I’ll get things done,” says Smith, who became a congressman at 27 and still has a young man’s energy and boyish looks.He spends much of his time both listening to the complaints of those who believe they’ve been wronged by government, fate, other people, or a combination of all — and pleading their cases to bureaucrats whose sense of outrage doesn’t match his.”

This video is of Sony Hodges speaking about her cause with David Kush at the 3rd Annual Congressional Reception. She spoke about her homelessness and the ways in which Congressman Smith could helped end homelessness not only in his district
The Advocacy Network rated him as Supportive in the 2008 Congressional Report Card. At this year’s Congressional Reception, the Advocacy Network commended David Kush who represented him for the his vote for the HUD budget against the majority of his party.
