Coming Home to build 520 housing units in plan to end homelessness
Homeless Trust Fund is a key to fulfilling the plan’s goals
Last week we reported on the successful first Annual Meeting of Coming Home of Middlesex County. The Star-Ledger has provided additional details on the meeting in an article – New Middlesex County ‘Coming Home’ non-profit plans to create 520 units for homeless – by Thomas B. Haydon.
“We’ve been able to put together a cutting-edge plan to deal with the problem of homelessness in Middlesex County,” Robert Mulcahy, chairman of the Ending Homelessness in Middlesex County committee, was quoted as saying in the article.
Discussing the need for a single point of entry Elizabeth Hance, president of Magyar Bank and vice president of the county committee to end homelessness is quoted as saying currently “people are being sent from one agency to another to another There is a duplication of services. It’s well intentioned but it’s not a good use of services.”
Using a state law enacted this year, freeholders will establish a homeless trust fund by assessing a $3 fee for certain documents routinely filed in the county clerk’s office. Even during a poor economy, the county could generate $400,000 annually, Mulcahy said. The fund could be started by January, committee members said.
