Services for Ending Long-Term Homelessness Act
Congressman Rush Holt only NJ sponsor!
SELHA would create a new program within the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) at HHS to fund an array of services in permanent supportive housing, with a focus on helping people move toward recovery and self-sufficiency. Under the legislation, households experiencing long-term homelessness could receive services that would continue once they are housed.
Cong. Alcee Hastings (D-FL) introduced the Services for Ending Long-Term Homelessness Act (SELHA) on September 23, 2009, that would provide services in permanent supportive housing for individuals and families experiencing long-term homelessness. Such services would focus on helping people move toward recovery and self-sufficiency.
The bill, H.R. 3636, is identical to S. 1523, which was introduced by Senators Richard Burr (R-NC) and Jack Reed (D-RI) on July 28, 2009.
Twelve additional Democrats have signed onto the H.R. 3636, which was referred to the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
However, of the sponsors there is only one from New Jersey – Congressman Rush Holt.

SELHA is such an important bill that we need our full delegation to be sponsoring this legislation. We strongly encourage you to contact your members of the House of Representatives and both Senator Menendez and Lautenberg and ask them to sponsor this legislation. This is one of the congressional actions that the Advocacy Network will use in preparing this year’s Congressional Report Card. When you contact your member of the House and or two Senators, please let them know that this will be including in the report card.
