The First Day of Winter.
The Longest Night of the Year.
December 21, 2009

Homeless people die from illnesses that affect everyone,
frequently without health care.

Health care is a human right.

Housing is a human right.

Physical safety is a human right.

Remember our neighbors and friends
who have died without homes.

Remember why they died.

Homeless Person's Memorial Day

Each year since 1990, on or near the first day of winter, which is the longest night of the year, many communities have held a Homeless Person’s Memorial Day.

We strongly encourage you to participate in an event in your community. If one is not scheduled we encourage you to have a moment of silence to honor those who are no longer with us.

We know how to end homelessness and we can achieve our goal and spend less.

NJANEH has discussed the strategies to develop a statewide ten year plan earlier this week in our post – Mercer Plan Could be Model for State – and have advocated for federal programs that would provide New Jersey the resources needed to end homelessness.

In addition, the County Homeless Trust Fund is an important building block in our campaign to end homelessness.

Working together, we can and will end homelessness so that we will no longer need to hold Homeless Person’s Memorial Day.

One of the first step we can all take is to observe the Homeless Sabbath in our faith based communities and to participate in one or more of the Homeless Person’s Memorial Day.
