Last year was very productive in our efforts to end homelessness in New Jersey even though the numbers increased faster than even the worst projections of the economic rescission. An article in The New York Times on January 3, 2010, on the missing safety net pointed out that “one in 50 Americans now lives in a household with a reported income that consists of nothing but a food-stamp card.”

The New Jersey Advocacy Network to End Homelessness has one overriding purpose, which is contained in our name – to advocate on local, state and federal levels for adequate funding and sound policies that will end homelessness.

In the pursuit of affordable, safe, sustainable and supportive housing for homeless individuals and families, the Advocacy Network has adopted five “Core Principles for Ending Homelessness.”  They represent a paradigm change from current practices, which we regard as essential to any future planning undertaken to end homelessness in New Jersey. As we did in 2009, we will be articulating and advocating for adequate funding and sound policies to implement these principles and end homelessness in NJ.

Our various public events – Congressional Reception, Learning Circles on HPRP, Homeless Trust Fund and Homeless Person’s Memorial Day, among others – helped to raise the issue of ending homelessness and helped us achieve our goal of advocacy on a local, state and federal level for adequate funding and sound practices that will end homelessness.

The homeless crisis did not happen on someone else’s watch. We are all responsible for the current crisis and it we will not end homelessness unless we are all involved in the solution.

With the New Year this is a good time to resolve to become part of the solution.
