in Homeless Trust Fund

Vote Set tonight at 7 PM

The Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders will be voting resolution 10-064 to establish the Somerset County Homeless Trust Fund at 7:00 PM on Tuesday January 26, 2010, in the Freeholders’ meeting room on the 3rd floor of 20 Grove Street in Somerville. We encourage our members, allies and friends who live or work in Somerset County for this important vote.

Somerset is the fifth county to vote on establishing a trust fund. The four that have approved establishing a trust fund are: Passaic, Union, Middlesex and Bergen.

Resolution 10-064 specifically calls for the:

Creation of a County Homelessness Trust Fund in accordance with P. L. 2009, Chapter 123 also known as N.J.S.A. 52:27D-280, Et Seq. And N.J.S.A. 2A:4-17 for a surcharge of $3.00 upon any document for which the surcharge is authorized by N.J.S.A. 52:27D-280, et seq. and N.J.S.A. 22A:4-17, which charge shall be in addition to any other charge or charges allowed by law.

MapThe Trust Fund Act allows counties to create and fund their own programs to end homelessness. The trust funds will provide some of the additional funds necessary to move homeless or formerly homeless individuals toward the goal of permanent affordable housing and self-sufficiency.

A county is allowed to collect the small sum of $3 for each document that must be filed by law with the county and they have to have developed their own plan to end homelessness that the money will support. The legislation permits counties to establish the funds. It does not require them to establish one.
